Sandy qualified from the Bristol Veterinary School in 1967 and worked in mixed practice in Wales and East Anglia. In 1993 he took a position as Lecturer in Veterinary Pathology at the Royal Veterinary College London.

In addition to teaching he became heavily involved in the college pathology diagnostic service, which included post mortem examination of many species, including horses, biopsies and cytology.

Sandy joined Finn Pathologists in October 1998 and has worked there ever since. In addition to the general day-to-day pathology Sandy has specialised in ophthalmic pathology, equines and farm animals.
